48 hours in San Diego Itinerary

San Diego is best experienced at a slower pace. This itinerary is perfect for travelers who like museums, scenic walks, bookstores, and ending the day by the water.


Day 1

Morning / Early Afternoon

  • Explore Balboa Park
    • Wander the grounds and gardens
    • Spend time at the Mingei International Museum which focuses on folk art, craft, and design from around the world

Late Afternoon

  • Head to Old Town San Diego
    • Take photos
    • Browse for a small souvenir
    • Walk through the historic streets and shops ( I found it boring but I can see how it would be appealing and it’s a pretty area for taking a walk too!)

Early Evening

  • Visit Verbatim Books, a cozy indie bookstore often described as a “meet-cute” spot
  • Stop by Lovesong Coffee, located right next to the bookstore, for a drink or small treat

Evening

  • Pick a chill dinner place close to your lodging or even get take out and sleep in.

Day 2

Morning

  • La Jolla has so many cafe’s …try one or two.

Late Morning

  • Head to La Jolla Cove / La Jolla Sunset Beach
    • Walk along the coast
    • Watch for seals lounging on the rocks
  • Visit the San Diego Sea Arch (free coastal viewpoint)

Midday

  • Explore Sunny Jim’s Sea Cave
  • Visit the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego (MCASD) – La Jolla

Afternoon

  • Lunch or café stop nearby
  • Take time to rest or walk along the coastline

Evening

  • Visit Sunset Cliffs Natural Park
    • Ideal for golden hour and ocean views
    • One of the best sunset spots in San Diego

Dinner

  • In-N-Out Burger
    • A classic Southern California stop if you want something quick and iconic
